What is a Lymphatic Drainage Massage?

CleanMarket lymphatic drainage sessions are 60 minutes, performed by a licensed massage therapist trained in manual lymphatic drainage.

Lymphatic Drainage Massage is a specialized, gentle massage technique designed to stimulate the movement of lymph fluid through the body's lymphatic system. Unlike deep-tissue or Swedish massage, Lymphatic Drainage Massage uses light, rhythmic strokes applied in specific sequences along the skin's surface to manually move lymph fluid toward the lymph nodes, where it can be filtered and recirculated.

The lymphatic system doesn't have a pump the way the cardiovascular system has the heart. It relies on muscle movement, breathing, and manual stimulation to keep fluid flowing. When lymph becomes sluggish — due to illness, surgery, a sedentary lifestyle, or inflammation — fluid can accumulate in tissues, causing puffiness, heaviness, and fatigue. Lymphatic Drainage Massage directly addresses this.

What's different about Lymphatic Drainage Massage at Clean Market?

Our Lymphatic Drainage Massage uses a signature method that incorporates Swedish Massage strokes, classic Vodder Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), myofascial release, vibration, cupping, Gua Sha, and stretching. Each session is personalized and varies depending on your needs, but the intent always is to aid lymphatic drainage and overall well-being.

A certified Lymphatic Massage Therapist will use very light pressure and gentle, wave-like movements across your neck, abdomen, arms, and legs, following the anatomical path of your lymphatic vessels. Sessions typically begin at the neck, where the primary lymphatic ducts drain, before working down through the body. You'll feel a gentle pumping and stretching sensation on the skin; notably different from conventional massage. Most clients feel deeply relaxed during and immediately after a session, and many report reduced puffiness and a lighter feeling within 24 hours.

Benefits of Lymphatic Drainage Massage

  • Supports circulation
  • Designed to ease post-travel and post-surgical puffiness (with medical clearance)
  • Designed to support immune function
  • Reduces stress and fatigue
  • Promotes relaxation
  • Calms the nervous system
  • Encourages comfort post-surgery (with surgical clearance)

WHAT TO EXPECT AT YOUR LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE MASSAGE SESSION

Before your session:
Arrive well-hydrated — lymphatic drainage works best when your body has adequate fluid. Avoid eating a heavy meal in the hour before.

During your session:
Sessions begin with a brief intake — your Lymphatic Massage Therapist will ask about your goals, any recent surgeries, current health conditions, and areas of concern. The massage itself is performed on a treatment table. You'll notice the pressure is much lighter than most massages you've had before; this is intentional. The lymphatic capillaries sit just beneath the skin's surface, and deep pressure would compress rather than stimulate them. Expect slow, rhythmic strokes across the neck, collarbones, abdomen, and extremities. Most clients drift into a deep state of relaxation.

After your session:
You may notice increased urination in the 24 hours following your session. Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol and heavy sodium for the remainder of the day. Some clients experience mild fatigue immediately after, which typically resolves with rest and hydration. The visible effects — reduced puffiness, lighter feeling in the legs, more defined facial contour — are usually noticeable within 12–24 hours.

Lymphatic Drainage at Clean Market

Lymphatic Drainage Massage — Frequently Asked Questions

What is lymphatic drainage massage?

Lymphatic drainage massage is a gentle, rhythmic manual technique performed by a licensed massage therapist that supports the body's natural lymphatic flow. Sessions at Clean Market last 60- or 90-minutes and use specific stroke patterns designed to support the lymphatic system after travel, surgery, or as part of an ongoing wellness routine.

How much does lymphatic drainage massage cost?

Pricing varies by location and session length. 60-minute Signature sessions at Clean Market start at $250 and 60-min specialty sessions (Sculpting, Post-Op, Prenatal) start at $275. Members save up to 15% off per session and there are packages available online. We do not accept insurance and HSA/FSA acceptance varies by plan — we recommend to please confirm with your administrator.

How long does a lymphatic drainage session take?

A Clean Market Signature Lymphatic Drainage Massage session is 60- or 90-minutes including a brief intake with the licensed massage therapist.

Is lymphatic drainage massage safe?

Lymphatic drainage performed by a licensed massage therapist trained in manual lymphatic drainage technique is generally well-tolerated by most clients. Sessions take place in a private treatment room. Certain conditions are contraindicated — you can always call 888-320-1699 to speak with the team — and post-surgical clients should consult their provider first.

Do I need a referral?

No referral is required for most clients. Post-surgical clients (post-liposuction, post-mastectomy, post-cosmetic) should bring documentation of medical clearance.

What's the difference between lymphatic drainage and regular massage?

Lymphatic drainage uses very light, rhythmic, directional pressure designed specifically to support lymphatic flow. Regular massage (Swedish, deep tissue, sports) targets muscles and connective tissue with broader, deeper strokes. Lymphatic drainage typically feels much gentler. Both have value — they address different physiological systems.

How often should I get lymphatic drainage?

Frequency depends on your goals. Clients using lymphatic drainage for post-travel recovery often book once or twice per month. Post-surgical clients may book weekly during the early recovery window per their doctor's guidance. As part of an ongoing wellness routine, every 2 to 4 weeks is common. Our team will recommend a cadence at your first session.
