Lymphatic Drainage Massage

We’ve worked with expert NYC practitioners to develop a signature Lymphatic Drainage Massage technique that is completely personalized to you. Available at Midtown East, NoHo, and FiDi at Brookfield Place in New York City.

What is a Lymphatic Drainage Massage?

Lymphatic Drainage Massage is a specialized, gentle massage technique designed to stimulate the movement of lymph fluid through the body's lymphatic system. Unlike deep-tissue or Swedish massage, Lymphatic Drainage Massage uses light, rhythmic strokes applied in specific sequences along the skin's surface to manually move lymph fluid toward the lymph nodes, where it can be filtered and recirculated.

The lymphatic system doesn't have a pump the way the cardiovascular system has the heart. It relies on muscle movement, breathing, and manual stimulation to keep fluid flowing. When lymph becomes sluggish — due to illness, surgery, a sedentary lifestyle, or inflammation — fluid can accumulate in tissues, causing puffiness, heaviness, and fatigue. Lymphatic Drainage Massage directly addresses this.

What's different about Lymphatic Drainage Massage at Clean Market?

Our Lymphatic Drainage Massage uses a signature method that incorporates Swedish Massage strokes, classic Vodder Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), myofascial release, vibration, cupping, Gua Sha, and stretching. Each session is personalized and varies depending on your needs, but the intent always is to aid lymphatic drainage and overall well-being.

A certified Lymphatic Massage Therapist will use very light pressure and gentle, wave-like movements across your neck, abdomen, arms, and legs, following the anatomical path of your lymphatic vessels. Sessions typically begin at the neck, where the primary lymphatic ducts drain, before working down through the body. You'll feel a gentle pumping and stretching sensation on the skin; notably different from conventional massage. Most clients feel deeply relaxed during and immediately after a session, and many report reduced puffiness and a lighter feeling within 24 hours.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT YOUR LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE MASSAGE SESSION

Before your session:
Arrive well-hydrated — lymphatic drainage works best when your body has adequate fluid. Avoid eating a heavy meal in the hour before.

During your session:
Sessions begin with a brief intake — your Lymphatic Massage Therapist will ask about your goals, any recent surgeries, current health conditions, and areas of concern. The massage itself is performed on a treatment table. You'll notice the pressure is much lighter than most massages you've had before; this is intentional. The lymphatic capillaries sit just beneath the skin's surface, and deep pressure would compress rather than stimulate them. Expect slow, rhythmic strokes across the neck, collarbones, abdomen, and extremities. Most clients drift into a deep state of relaxation.

After your session:
You may notice increased urination in the 24 hours following your session. Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol and heavy sodium for the remainder of the day. Some clients experience mild fatigue immediately after, which typically resolves with rest and hydration. The visible effects — reduced puffiness, lighter feeling in the legs, more defined facial contour — are usually noticeable within 12–24 hours.

Lymphatic Drainage Massage FAQ

How often should you get a lymphatic drainage massage?

For general wellness, once or twice a month is sufficient for most people. For post-surgical recovery, we recommend 3–5 sessions in the first two to three weeks after surgery, then tapering to weekly maintenance or as needed. Your Lymphatic Massage Therapist will recommend a frequency based on your specific goals.

Is lymphatic drainage massage safe?

For most people, yes. Lymphatic drainage is extremely gentle and has a very low risk profile. However, there are a few contraindications so please contact us at 888-320-1699 to confirm eligibility and medical clearance prior to booking.

Does lymphatic drainage massage hurt?

No. Lymphatic drainage should feel deeply relaxing, not painful. The pressure used is intentionally very light. If you're expecting a deep tissue massage, you'll be surprised by how different it feels. Some clients with significant post-surgical swelling experience mild tenderness in affected areas, but this is minor and resolves quickly.

What's the difference between lymphatic drainage massage and a regular massage?

A regular massage (whether it be a Swedish, deep tissue, sports massage) primarily targets muscles, fascia, and connective tissue. It uses moderate to deep pressure to release tension, improve circulation, and address muscular pain. Lymphatic drainage massage uses very light, specific, directional pressure applied to the skin's surface to stimulate movement of lymph fluid. It targets the lymphatic system specifically, not muscle tissue. The techniques and goals are fundamentally different.

How do I know if lymphatic drainage massage is right for me?

Lymphatic drainage is a great fit if you're dealing with persistent puffiness or bloating, recovering from surgery, managing chronic swelling in your legs or arms, looking to support detoxification and immune function, or wanting a regular wellness treatment that complements your existing self-care routine. Our team is happy to answer questions before your first visit.

Do you offer facial massages?

We offer a Gua Sha Lymphatic Drainage Facial Massage which is a de-puffing, detoxifying, and tension-releasing treatment for the face, neck, and décolleté. It combines acupressure, manual lymphatic drainage, and Gua Sha stone techniques, and includes scalp, neck, shoulder, and arm massage. It is ideal for reducing facial puffiness, improving skin clarity, and relieving jaw tension and is available for 30-min, 60-min, and 90-min sessions.

What kind of lymphatic drainage does Clean Market offer?

Clean Market’s signature lymphatic massage is a therapeutic and personalized lymphatic treatment that blends various lymphatic therapies. Parts of the massage can be as light as traditional Vodder Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) or can include more vigorous Fascia release and contour strokes, cupping and stretching. Each session varies depending on the client’s needs, but the intent always is to aid lymphatic drainage and overall well-being.

How will I feel after a Clean Market Lymphatic Drainage Massage?

Most people report feeling relaxed after the massage and ‘freer’ in their bodies. Sometimes, if you are experiencing a significant detox you may experience mild detox symptoms after - most commonly fatigue, headaches, body aches, nausea, or brain fog. Drinking plenty of water and resting will help mitigate detox symptoms and help you recover quickly.

Additionally, depending on the pressure of your personalized Lymphatic Drainage Massage, you may experience soreness and light bruising if you bruise easily, or are specifically targeting cellulite during your treatment.
